Powerful Tools for Caregivers!!
The NYS Caregiving and Respite Coalition recently sponsored a two day “train the trainer” series for a caregiver program called, ‘”Powerful Tools for Caregivers.”

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an evidence based program of six weekly classes for caregivers of families who provide care for dementia individuals. In the weekly classes, family caregivers develop tools to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk, communicate more effectively in challenging situations, manage emotions and make tough care-giving decisions. The six weekly classes has been shown to have a positive impact on caregiver health for a diverse group of caregivers including rural, ethnic minorities, adult children of aging parents, well-spouse partners, and caregivers at differing stages in their care-giving roles.

Fifteen new trainers were educated on this program, including two from Chautauqua County. COI’s Alzheimer’s Specialist, Nancy Dunbar, along with Chautauqua County Office for the Aging Caregiver Support Specialist, Jennifer Ellman, were among the participants. Both will be starting a new Powerful Tools for Caregivers series soon.

For more information on COI’s Alzheimer’s Services, please call: 716-366-3335 x 1236.
