PROGRAM: WIC (Women, Infants & Children Nutritional Program)

Description of Program / Service Provided:

Supplemental Nutrition Program for Pregnant, Breastfeeding and Post-partum Women, Infants and Children up to age 5 who are at medical/nutritional risk and meet income guidelines.

Provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, and counseling in addition to on-site health assessments, including height and weight measurements and blood work, and Breastfeeding support and education.

Foods are provided through WIC Checks, and consist of cereal, milk, eggs, juice, cheese, dry beans or peanut butter, and infant formula, juice, and cereal, which are redeemable at participating grocery stores throughout the County.

Program is designed to act as an adjunct to the Health Care System for prenatal women and young children.

All services are confidential and offered at 14 clinic sites throughout Chautauqua County.

Program is linked to the MOMS Prenatal Support Services and Home Visiting Programs, and the Family/Child Health plus Facilitated Enrollment Insurance Program.

History:

WIC was first authorized in 1974.

Based on numerous studies, WIC has proven that it reaches a high risk population of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children with a positive impact on their health status.

Benefits include a decrease in the number of low birth-weight babies; a decrease in the number of children who are below normal in weight and height; and the reduction of anemia in children.
