COI's Migrant Farm Worker Health Program
recently partnered with several community groups for its "Migrant
Health & Wellness Fair."
The Fair, held in the Fredonia Migrant Head Start School, features
glucose and cholesterol screenings by a team from Brooks Hospital,
nutrition education by Cornell Cooperative Extension, educational
sessions about mammography, breast examinations, and a free
colorectal exam kit from Partners for Prevention; and education
and information materials about STDs from the Chautauqua
County Health Department.
The Fredonia Migrant Tutorial provides translation services for
the fair and identifies those who need help learning English.
Fidelis Insurance Company also sends representatives to offer
insurance availability and eligibility information. They work
with the Facilitated Enrollment Program, who does much the
same thing. The MOMS and WIC program are also represented.
Chautauqua Opportunities had Registered Nurses and LPN's provide
blood pressure screening for everyone. They also provided educational
Spanish books regarding diabetes. Recipe books were also included.
A cup-cake decoration session was instrumental in keeping |
the children busy so their parents
could take part in the other sessions. Mobile Crisis Program ( of
Chautauqua Opportunities) provided information on their crisis
intervention program an d24 hour hot-line to obtain help.
The AIDS Community Service Program teamed up with the State Health
Department in order to do HIV testing during the Fair.
The Family Services Coordinator presented books, coloring books,
crayons and many information brochures to each family member.
A healthy dinner was provided for all by the COI kitchen. New York
State Troopers barracks provided demonstrations for proper
Child car set installation. This event continues to grow with
each season.

The Alzheimer's Community
Service Program of Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. offers free
Respite Care hours to families who are taking care of loved
ones afflicted with Alzheimer's or any other related dementias.
Caregivers that are taking care of family members afflicted with
Alzheimer's or other dementias are encouraged to come join
our support group. Ideas and strength are drawn from each
other at these support group sessions. It is held on the
second Wednesday of the month from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm at
the Steger Apartments in Dunkirk.
If you feel you are unable to attend |
due to a lack of a "caresitter,"
we can help. With one phone call to 366-3335, a qualified personal
care aide can be scheduled to attend to your loved one in
your absence. This will enable you to not only have time
to attend this support group but also to have extra time
for yourself.
If you would like to access these services or gather information
on other services offered through the Alzheimer's Community
Service program, contact Sally Sanderson at 366-3335.
The Alzheimer's Community Service Program of Chautauqua Opportunities,
Inc. is funded by the New York State Department of Health,
