COi's Alzheimer's education program
Participates in annual care giver conference

Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. in a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York sponsored the 4th Annual Caregiver Conference held at the Present Center in Jamestown on August 14th. Caregivers and vendors from various agencies were greeted with a continental breakfast buffet.

This year’s conference focused on “Alzheimer’s Disease: Partnering with your Physician.” This interactive workshop provided practical tools and take home materials to assist caregivers “in making the most of their time” when they meet with their physician.

Some of those tools such as the Care Log, Medication Log and Appointment Log can prove to be invaluable to the caregiver who feels fragmented and overextended. Proper usage of these tools can help to restore a sense of order into the chaotic environment that dementia perpetuates.

The Alzheimer’s Community Service Program of Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. is committed to the continued education and support of those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. The tools mentioned above can be procured by calling 366-3335 or by stopping in at the Home Care Office of Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc.

To help with ensuring that these needs are met, the New York State Department of Health recently announced that additional funding has been made available to help with providing services to this population in the amount of $4500. bringing the grant total to $39,500. The additional money will be used for transportation and translation services, outreach and health education or promotion, in-camp screening, and dental and / or vision screening.

Plans are in the works to hold Health and Wellness Fairs in the North County this fall with a variety of screenings including screening, glucose and cholesterol testing, monitoring blood pressure, and tuberculin testing scheduled.

WIC and Facilitated Enrollment Representatives will be on-site to explain their programs through the help of translators with plans to partner in these events with Cornell Cooperative Extension, Brooks Memorial Hospital and the Migrant Head Start.

Several educational workshops are also being planned for the remainder of the year including “Basic Life & Soft Skills”, and “Diabetes Education & Back Safety”. Sessions will be presented by RN Trainer Cyndee Rizzuto who will teach the sessions through a translator. Handouts will also be presented in Spanish and distributed for future reference.
