Migrant Health Care Scholarship Awarded

Recently, Program Manager, Anne Massar was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $800.00 to attend the 16th Annual East Coast Migrant Forum. The forum was held October 23rd through the 25th in White Plains, New York.

Topics included “Coordinating Farm Worker Health Outreach Programs, HIV / AIDS Among Migrant Farm Workers , The President’s Initiative: Way to Grow! and “Does Health Insurance Improve Health Services for Migratory Children”.

The theme for this year’s annual event was “Generaciones: Building a Health Future for All Generations”. The three day event included a series of conference workshops, and break-out sessions for professionals at any level. The informative sessions were given by the most knowledgeable experts in this field, including members of the Health Resources and Services Administration Team.

The program was sponsored by many funding sources, including the Finger Lakes Migrant Health Care Program, with whom COI recently collaborated with to increase health service access to migrant workers and their families through the Migrant Health Outreach Program.

The scholarship was awarded to Massar by the North Carolina Primary Health Care Association. While in attendance, she was able to network and link with many other agencies from across the East Coast to share ideas to improve healthy outcomes for the migrant community.

Wastewater Program Started

The Governor’s Office on Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds recently partnered with COI to assist in allowing 50 individual septic systems, which are in violation of the Chautauqua County Health Department Sanitary Code, to be upgraded and brought to code over the next two years. With this $27,000 grant, the program will provide assistance throughout the county with Chautauqua Opportunities serving as the Sub recipient.

“This opportunity to assist families in Chautauqua County with their individual home sanitary needs provides a double benefit to all”, indicates Richard Calla, Housing Specialist, “not only will the homeowner have a new septic system, but the possibility of ground water contamination will also be eliminated.”

Mr. Steve Johnson, Director of Environmental Services, with the CCHD indicates, “The Health Department is very please to support this program and will work closely with COI during the implementation process. The ability to assist residents in the County without municipal sewers is of paramount importance and the success of this program could mean additional dollars in the future.”

Additional information on this program can be obtained by contacting Chautauqua Opportunities program offices in Jamestown at 661-9430 or Dunkirk at 366-3333 or visit our website at www.chautauquaopportunities.com.
