Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. will be receiving additional funding to continue the provision of services through the Weatherization Assistance Program for the 2001 – 2002 project year, according to Roberta Keller, Executive Director for COI and Cathy Hoitink, Weatherization Director. COI’s initial allocation of $428,480.00 has been raised to $554,087.00. The project, which began in April, will continue through March 31, 2002 . The program, now in its 25th year of operation is funded by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR).

what Weatherization can doCOI will be required to complete 189 units throughout Chautauqua County project year. Both homeowners and renters, with their landlord’s permission, may qualify to participate as long as they meet federally-established income guidelines. In rental situations, landlords are required to financially contribute towards the cost of weatherization services. Those households who contain a member receiving SSI, Public Assistance, Food Stamps, or have received HEAP benefits are considered to be automatically eligible.

Services that are available through the program include infiltration-reduction measures such as: weather stripping, caulking, and glass replacement, insulation of attics, sidewall cavities, basement sill areas and crawl spaces. Also testing, cleaning, repair, and possible replacement of heating systems and hot water tanks. Repair and / or replacement of primary windows and doors, installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, installation of proper ventilation, testing and possible replacement of refrigerators, as well as minor repairs to ensure the efficiency of the weatherization materials installed.

COI employs in-house staff to install weatherization materials following the completion of an energy audit that will identify what specific services are required. A final post-inspection of all work provided is also conducted by COI staff to assure work quality and contract compliance. In addition, representatives from DHCR are required to inspect a large segment of the units weatherized by Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc.

Those interested in applying for services should be aware that COI maintains an established waiting list of pre-qualified clients at all times.
